High Sheriffs Chaplain
Reverend Robert (Bob) Atkins
I spent most of my working life as an auditor and then Finance Director in the public sector. My last 3 roles were as Treasurer of Thames Valley Police Authority, Director of Finance at the Metropolitan Police Authority and Finance Director of Thames Valley Probation Trust. In retirement, I have had a spell as a Special Adviser to the Home Affairs Committee of the House of Common, so I have strong professional links to the police service and the criminal justice system.
In 1998 I was ordained as a priest in the Church of England and served as a member of the Bicester Area Team, as a Self Supporting Minister (SSM or NSM), until I moved to Derby at the end of October 2018. I was granted a Permission to Officiate (PTO), by the Bishop of Derby in 2019 and became an Associate Priest at St Philip, Chaddesden. Subsequently, I joined the team at All Saints Cathedral, Derby as an Associate Priest.
In July 2000, I was inducted as an Honorary Padre to 2507 Bicester Squadron of the Air Training Corps and on moving to Derby, transferred to 1360 Stapleford Squadron. Since moving to Derby, my Chaplaincy role has expanded considerably and now includes: Bishop’s Chaplain to retired/PTO clergy in Derby City and South Derbyshire Archdeaconry, St Mary’s Wharf Police Station, Nottingham Road Fire Station, Derby County Cricket Club and Derbyshire Cricket Society. I am also a Trustee and Board member for Chaplaincy Derbyshire and Derby Diocesan Academy Trust and a member of Odyssey Collaborative Trust.
In 1970, I married Sheridan and we have 4 children and currently 4 grandchildren.
